Be prepared to get dirty when it rains

Information about traveling in the Northern Territory, Australia.

Road Conditions

The major roads in Central Australia are fairly good by Australian standards. However, to get to some of the best places you need to put your vehicle in four wheel drive and head onto the dirt. The Northern Territory Department of Transport and Works maintains a web site listing road conditions and closures. In Central Australia and the Top End, road conditions can change rapidly with rainfall, so keep an eye on the weather. The Bureau of Meteorology has regular updates on weather conditions throughout Australia.

How hot does it get?

Central Australia is typical of semi-arid environments with generally warm to hot days and cool nights. During the winter months when it is best to travel, the nights can be quite cool.

This graph was derived from temperature information for Alice Springs found on the Bureau of Meteorology web site.

Tip

There are penalties for traveling on roads that are closed. Keep an eye on road closures
